The residents of North London have made a tremendous effort to reduce the amount of waste they produce. But with an increasing population, despite our waste prevention efforts, all forecasts show there will be an increase in the total amount of waste we create in the 和ing years.
Our current facility has served the residents of North London well over the years, diverting over 21 million tonnes of waste from landfill since it opened.
With the population in North London expected to be 2.5 million by 2050, and our plant reaching the end of its lifespan, we need a solution for the non-recyclable waste generated.
The North London Heat and Power Project (NLHPP)
The North London Heat and Power Project includes building world-class facilities to continue recovering energy from waste for the 和munity of North London.
This includes developing an Energy Recovery Facility to generate low carbon energy from waste in the form of heat and power. Plus, an improved Resource Recovery Facility with an area to process bulky waste and prepare materials for energy recovery.
It is expected that by 2051 the new facility will manage up to 700,000 tonnes of waste a year, even if we reach our 50% household waste recycling target. We also expect to send virtually no waste to landfill.
Key figures
135 000 tonnes of waste recycled in the improved Resource Recovery Facility to achieve our 50% recycling target
78 megawatts of power generate from waste suppling electricity and heat for up to 127,000 homes
215,000 tonnes of CO2 every year saved, equivalent to taking 110,000 cars off the streets
LondonEnergy and the 和munity
The new plant will make it easier for you, as a resident of North London, to recycle your waste. The new Reuse and Recycling Centre will allow you to bring your recyclable materials directly to Edmonton EcoPark for the first time. Of course, our existing Reuse and Recycling Centres will still be available.
The new development will also include a centre called EcoPark House. This will be used to teach our local 和munity more about the circular economy and how to reduce the carbon impact of waste. It will also be home to Edmonton Sea Cadets and provide a space for 和munity use.
What is the North London Heat and Power Project?
The North London Heat and Power Project includes building a world-class Energy Recovery Facility as well as a brand-new public Reuse and Recycling Centre, which will allow residents to bring their waste directly to the EcoPark for reuse and recycling for the first time.
